Sabbath Keeping ~ Keep It Holy

by Sandra Bennett
TCF

7 Oct
“Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.”
~ Exodus 20:8 ~
“Is it not interesting that the one Commandment
that begins with ‘remember’ is the one
Commandment mainstream Christianity
has forgotten?”
~ unknown ~
“I first found delight in the Sabbath many years ago, when, as a busy surgeon, I knew that the Sabbath became a day of personal healing. By the end of each week, my hands were sore from repeatedly scrubbing them with soap, water and a bristle brush. I also needed a breather from the burden of a demanding profession.” ~ Russell M. Nelson ~
“Keeping the Sabbath day holy is
much more than just physical rest.
It involves spiritual renewal and worship.”
~ James E. Faust ~

“If you keep the Sabbath, you start to see creation as not as something to get away from your ordinary life, but a place to frame attentiveness to your life.”
~ Eugene H. Peterson ~

“Anybody can observe the Sabbath,
but making it holy sure takes the rest of the week.
~ Alice Walker ~

“On Sabbath, the work is never done but we are invited to set it aside for the moment to dwell in the presence of God, to experience the sacred right in the middle of the secular.” ~ Terri Lynn Underwood ~

“The Sabbath isn’t about resting perfectly; it’s about resting in the One who is perfect.”

~ Shelly Miller ~

“The Sabbath provides wonderful opportunities to strengthen family ties.”
~ Russell M. Nelson ~

“Keeping the Sabbath day holy is a refuge from the storms of this life.”
~ Quentin L. Cook ~

“The Sabbath is a weekly cathedral raised up in my dining room, in my family, in my heart.” ~ Anita Diament ~

“Sabbath is God’s metronome, marking out a weekly rhythm of rest and renewal. It is our reference point for knowing how to plan and live our lives. Without the Sabbath, our lives are a jumbled mess of individual events; with Sabbath, they can be a beautiful balance of labor and rest.” ~ Kerri Weems ~

“The people who misuse the Sabbath lose the blessings of spiritual food and growth promised to those who keep this commandment.”
~ Joseph B. Wirthlin ~

“Who turns down a mini vacation every six days?”

~ Sandra ~
“…But they rested on the Sabbath
in obedience to the commandment.”
~ Luke 23:56 ~
Please tuck me in your prayers; God bless you.

Linda Sue’s childhood Sabbaths were like mine and it seemed to be much easier to make happen in those days. I remember that no shopping was done then, no errands run. Nowadays we too often try to catch up on these things on Sunday afternoon.

I noticed Alice Waters quote above, would love to know more about that!

I will pray for you, Sandra, hope you’re okay and if not that you will be soon.

Dewena, thank you so much, prayers greatly appreciated! Physically, I’m fine but working hard these beautiful Autumn days. I’m prepping the farm, house, vehicles for winter; buying and storing hay (which always requires re-arranging the barn…sigh. Hopefully, this is the year the barn is put to rights.) and helping Mom/Dad, siblings, friends, church. I’m so much busier than I was at the other farm, it seems I’m always behind.
I’m not sure who Alice Waters is/was but agree with her statement. It’s (fairly) easy for me to observe the Sabbath, although there are times I stop at the store for a gallon of milk before coming home. Make trips count, eh? Generally, I go to church, come home, feed everyone (sometimes myself! lol) then read, hold down the porch, maybe play in the studio, almost always write cards/notes/letters to be mailed on the morrow. It’s a better life when I take time to rest my body, mind and spirit.

good reminders – I recall the Sundays of my youth – when hardly anything was open as far as stores – no malls or even grocery stores – just a few “convenience stores” or gas stations with a refrigerated section with milk, eggs and a few other items. We focused on church, familiy and rest – sweet memories. A gift of rest – Sabbaths are so needed and so rarely taken seriously – IMHO
Will be proud to pray for you dear friend – always.

Linda Sue, our growing up Sabbaths were wonderful and when we make good choices, can be again. My two nephews, in their 30’s, both observe the Sabbath by spending it with their family. They enjoy time with their children, their wives and rarely do I hear of them leaving home unless it’s to visit. Both young men are well rounded, polite, considerate and are raising their children the same way. The blessings continues to the next generation and it’s a gift for everyone.
