“Favorite children are often the cause of much sin in believers; the Lord is grieved when he sees us doting on them beyond measure; they will live to be as great a curse to us as Absalom was to David, or they will be taken from us to leave our homes desolate. If Christians desire to grow thorns with which to stuff their sleepless pillows, let them dote on their children.” ~ C. H. Spurgeon, Morning by Morning ~

Dori, every time God brings you to mind, you're tucked into prayer.
Karen, I am so sorry but glad you enjoyed the quotes.
LindaSue, I do know what you mean; it's a difficult day and would be too easy to stay home from church but that's not honoring God, is it?
Dewena, I think it's more that we shouldn't put our children before our husbands nor before God.
Kathy, I've often wondered about Eli's sons…such a sad family.

So true, especially the first quote. Mothers like Isaac's wife Rachel ( Jacob & Esau ) are symbolic of the quote, as are many mothers I personally know.
I am studying I Samuel with a group of ladies and really, the sons of Eli & Samuel were spoiled sons who were not held accountable and responsible for very bad things. As mothers we should be willing to teach our sons & daughters and also not give them a pass for or enable sin in their lives, but instead pray for them, teach them, and if they persist in what the Bible clearly says is sin, confront them in love, the love a parent has for a child. The love that would rather risk severing a relationship than allow a beloved child to think he / she has our approval or indifference to their indulging in sin.

Sandra, as always, your verses and quotes strike home and encourage and challenge. Ah, Mr. Spurgeon, though–it's so very hard not to dote on your children and grandchildren. Maybe his definition of "dote" was different from mine!

Mother Day is a mixed bag of feelings for me – being childless (not by choice) makes me feel quite out of it at special church services for mothers – BUT – grateful for a world in which good mothers exist and bless their children.

Great quotes about mothers here! Mine died at 75 of congestive heart failure over 13 years ago, still think of her often and miss her so much!
